Mlambe Mission Hospital administrator sister Florence Manja has urged people to seek regular medical check-ups to know their health status.
She made the call on Wednesday during a free-screening exercise conducted by the Islamic Health Association of Malawi (Iham) at the hospital located in Lunzu, Blantyre.
At the end of the exercise, the most common conditions discovered were hernias and hydrocele.
Manja cited poverty and delayed screening as factors contributing to the high number of people with such conditions.
“Since we launched this campaign on July 25 2026, our doctors have assessed clients and booked them for surgeries. Some procedures are already completed, while others are in progress. So far, we have faced no challenges and some patients have been discharged,” she said.
Manja said that as of July 29 2026, about 112 successful surgeries were conducted with 102 clients screened.
Iham executive director Hajj Daiton said Mlambe Hospital, which is under the Christian Health Association of Malawi, partnered Iham to mobilise resources to help Malawians access medical care.
Iham vice-chairperson Riaz Abdul Sattar said they targeted 150 surgeries in July 2026.
“Many patients have been assisted with some waiting for treatment for three to five years. We are grateful to the directors, nurses and doctors at Mlambe Mission Hospital for their support,” he said.
Iham is a faith-based organisation in Malawi that works with specialised surgeons.
The organisation facilitates outreach initiatives to rural areas and various hospitals to help those who cannot afford treatment or go abroad for care.
